Heartland State Trail

This was one of the first old railroad lines to connect trail projects in the country.

This trail is a 49 mile multiple use trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake.The trail is located entirely on a level abandoned railroad grade except for a four mile segment north of Walker.

The 27 mile segment between Park Rapids and Walker has a paved surface. This segment also has a second grassy treadway for horseback riding and mountain biking.

Parking

The trailheads for the paved section of the Heartland State Trail are located in Park Rapids and Walker. Parking for the trail is available in Park Rapids at Heartland County Park, Dorset, Nevis, Akeley, Walker, and Erickson's Landing north of Walker.

Volunteers Needed

Please take a moment to volunteer to help maintain a trail.

Whether it be collecting trash thrown along the path,to lending a helping hand with a shovel for repairs.

There are so many ways to help.Just a little time from others makes a huge difference.

We support no specific trail here in the state.We want you to support what trail matters to you.One in your community.Talk to them,and say "Hey..what can I do to help this trail?".

Take the time to appreciate trails in the state,and encourage others to get on out there and stretch the legs a bit.

There is nothing better than a good walk,or hike for mental & physical exercise.

ON THE OTHER HAND :

You don't need to volunteer...just give thanks,and a pat on the back to those who do maintain the trails here in the state.That's just as important as bending over to pick up a piece of trash.

Having those who care about our trail system here in Minnesota..helps the movement to maintain them.

So we thank you for visiting,and having an interest in looking up a trail,or looking for a new place to hike.

We are constantly adding new hiking paths to explore on a weekly basis.

The bottom line is.Take action and help be part of a path in Minnesota.Your interest alone will help keep it alive.

Find a trail system that interests you.

That's what we're about,and take it from there and stretch those legs :)
